A member of Congress who fervently advocates separation between state and religion is the guest on the Freedom From Religion Foundation’s “Freethought Matters” TV show this Sunday.
Rep. Jamie Raskin, the co-chair of the Congressional Freethought Caucus, is the author of the gripping new book Unthinkable. Raskin writes about being in the U.S. Capitol on Jan. 6, 2021, when it was under assault, then becoming House manager of President Trump’s second impeachment. And these momentous events occurred right after the death of his beloved son, Tommy. Raskin speaks about all this on the show, as well as the Christian nationalist roots of the insurrection and about Thomas Paine, who he named his son after and for whom he has introduced a bill to authorize a Washington, D.C., memorial.
“I wrote the book as a love letter to my son, and it also became a love letter to my country, too,” Raskin tells “Freethought Matters” co-hosts Dan Barker and Annie Laurie Gaylor. “It was a very intense 50-day period I lived through with my family, losing Tommy on the last day of 2020. We had our graveside service on Tuesday, January the 5th. And on Wednesday, Jan. 6, one week after we lost Tommy, was, of course, the violent insurrection at the Capitol and Donald Trump’s attempted coup against the government to overthrow the presidential election and Joe Biden’s majority in the Electoral College.”
