A Florida high school student who is in the forefront of protests against Florida’s anti-LGBTQ “Don’t Say Gay” law is the guest on the Freedom From Religion Foundation’s “Freethought Matters” TV show this Sunday.
Florida’s controversial Parental Rights in Education law, also known as the “don’t say gay” bill, outright prohibits or seeks to inhibit public schools from discussing or teaching about sexual orientation and gender identity. Will Larkins, a 17-year-old Florida student and nonbeliever, has spoken out against the harmful effects of this bill before the Florida Legislature, has coordinated a walkout of 500 students and has written an op-ed that appeared in The New York Times. FFRF is proud to name Larkins as a Catherine Fahringer student activist awardee, which carries a $5,000 scholarship.
“All of the oppression that I’ve faced my entire life, whether or not these people are religious, the hatred stems from ideals that come from religion, and it’s literally a human construct,” Larkins tells “Freethought Matters” co-hosts Dan Barker and Annie Laurie Gaylor. “I was born gay. You weren’t born religious. You can choose to stop going to church. I can’t choose to stop being gay.”
