Read More News Release Archives – Freedom From Religion Foundation – Freedom From Religion Foundation The guest on the Freedom From Religion Foundation’s “Freethought Matters” TV show this Sunday has been ringing the alarm bells loudly about white Christian nationalism for many years.
Samuel Perry is an award-winning assistant professor of sociology and religious studies at the University of Oklahoma and a leading expert on Christian nationalism. His books include Taking America Back for God with co-author Andrew Whitehead and his new work, The Flag and the Cross: White Christian Nationalism and the Threat to American Democracy, co-authored with Philip Gorski. Perry also contributed a chapter to the significant report on white Christian nationalism’s role in the Capitol attack on Jan. 6, 2021, released earlier this year by the Freedom From Religion Foundation and the Baptist Joint Committee for Religious Freedom.
“We wanted to argue that the underlying ideology beneath the Capitol insurrection and the kind of forces that we saw buying into the big lie, buying into anti-democratic trends over the past few years, is not fringe and is actually something that is alarmingly mainstream: That is white Christian nationalism,” he explains to “Freethought Matters” co-hosts Dan Barker and Annie Laurie Gaylor the motivation for writing The Flag and the Cross.
If you don’t live in the quarter-plus of the nation where the show broadcasts on Sunday, you can right now watch the interview on FFRF’s YouTube channel. New shows go up every Thursday. You can also receive notifications when we post new episodes of “Freethought Matters” by subscribing to the playlist on FFRF’s YouTube channel.
An upcoming guest on the show will also be discussing white Christian nationalism: Katherine Stewart, the author of the recently released The Power Worshippers. Other upcoming shows will feature actor John de Lancie (portraying “Q” in the new series “Star Trek: Picard”), atheist activist Aron Ra, Daniel Dennett and novelist John Irving.  This fall season already contains must-see interviews with Texas iconoclast Jim Hightower (who will be receiving FFRF’s Clarence Darrow award at its October convention), leading constitutional abortion rights expert Professor Geoffrey Stone, Professor Anthea Butler, an incisive commentator on white Christian nationalism, and atheist Washington Post columnist Kate Cohen.
